I stayed at the Taj Palace hotel in Dew Delhi. They are charging me Rs2245 for a car that collected us from New Delhi train station and took us to the hotel -- a 20-minute journey. Rs2245 is around $40, which seems way to expensive.

Are we getting ripped off?

Note that we didn't get a taxi -- we had the hotel organsie a car for us. I expected it to be more than a taxi, but not this much more.

An ordinary car should charge only Rs 150 maximum. A limousine should cost maximum Rs 500.

Standard minimum fare for a taxi is about INR 450 - 500. AC cabs cost approximate 25% more.
Yes you were ripped off :-( Would recommend getting a 'Pre-paid' taxi from the booth outside the station/airport next time you visit. Those charge government approved rates and taxis have to comply.

NB:
Since you ordered a car frm the hotel then the price they are charging is pretty standard. Five star hotels have a higher basic rate then city cabs.

Yes you most certainly are!
Go to Ajmeri gate side on New Delhi railway station. There is a booth for PRE-PAID Taxis. You book a taxi for yr specific destination for a specefic price which is paid in advance to guy at the booth and he will give you a recpt. for the same.

Conisdering the fact you are going to TAj, the cabbie my expect a nice tip! :-)..

enjoy your stay
