It goes on the left ring finger. If you ever get engaged to him, at that point switch it to the right.

It depends on your customs. Some ppl do not put any rings except the actual wedding ring on the left hand. HOwever, no matter where in the world u are, a ring on the 4th finger of the left hand signifies that the person is attached, be it marriage or otherwise. I am engaged and my ring is on my left hand. Either way it's what's in your heart.

Promise rings can be worn on any finger, but those symbolizing pre-engagement or chastity are generally worn on the left ring finger
I guess it also depends on what kind of promise it is. Some friends also give eachother promise rings that are worn on the right ring finger.

If it is a promise that you two are in a committed relationship it goes on the left.
If it is a promise of chastity or another promise that does NOT include anything that could lead to marriage, it goes on the right.

Honestly, I simply do not *get* a "promise ring".
What does it mean - "I promise to marry you - someday"?
Isn't what what GETTING ENGAGED means?
A promise ring sounds like some invented stage between dating and engagement.

I think it would go on the left since that's the hand that the wedding band will go on eventually. I'm not sure though.
