Not really. There could be someone way back there in the family tree that had black eyes. There's no way to tell for sure unless this family has photographs of every family member for 40 generations.
My family has a similar occurrence. Everyone in the family for as far back as anyone remembers has either had brown eyes or blue eyes. Yet my brother and I both have green eyes! We are the only ones in our family with this eye color. Our paternity has never been in question. Somewhere back in the family tree, someone had to have had green eyes. It's just so far back that no one remembers.

In this case dark eyes would be a recessive gene, and just happened to pop up. My parents were both dark-brown-eyed, my siblings had dark brown eyes and dark hair, and I popped out with blond hair and hazel eyes, which were several generations removed on my mother's side. I don't think it's a reflection of anything but the capricious nature of genetics. Tell the family not to worry about it; the child in question will probably have a lot of light-eyed children.

Not really, the black color could be a resessive gene. While we understand alot about genes there are still some suprises and tracing back to the great grandparents may not be enough. Conversely, it may indicate that great grandmother had an affair...
If you are actually worried that some one was unfaithful, you could have a DNA test done....

green, blue and grey colors are all recessive genes in your DNA. I am sure that it was more to do with the darker dominant color that cause the child to have dark eyes. Plus, I really like girls with dark eyes... this could be a plus!!!

Nothing is wrong. In my family ( parents, cousins) there are mostly blue or green eyes. A few brown eyes. My husband & I both have green eyes. When we had our boys, they had brown eyes.

We have instructions for different coloured eyes within our DNA however, you will *generally* inherit what the dominant gene dictates but not always.

There is such a thing as a dormant dominant gene, just waits around a few generations to trick you!

No. Eye color is the result of a complex combination of factors. It's not dictated by one gene.
