In general, it is never legal to hit anyone unless there is some legal justification for it, such as self defense or consent (as in the case of boxing). Striking anyone without proper legal justification is typically battery, which is punishable under both civil and criminal law.

The risk a male faces in striking a female is an increased liklihood that the offense will be prosecuted (police agencies are required by law to take domestic violence allegations very seriously, and prosecutors are more likely to pursue these cases).

The standards for self-defense differ from state to state. Some states may require a person to leave the situation ("flee") if at all possible, while other states allow a person to stand their ground. This is typically more of an issue where deadly force is involved.

In almost any case where a male alleges self-defense against a female some questions will arise: 1) Was the male actually threatened by the female? 2) Was it necessary for the male to strike the female to stop the attack? 3) Was the amount of force used required, or excessive? 4) Or was the attack simply anger and retalliation? Unless the female attacker is trained in some sort of marshal arts, or the male is physically frail, you can imagine how a court or jury might look at the situation.

Under normal circumstances NO, it is NOT OK to hit a woman. BUT there ARE extenuating circumstances for everything. ANYONE hits a cop and they got it coming. BUT a cop is not just gonna haul off and hit you back either. HE/SHE will take control of the situation. Now if some female thug on the street assaults someone EVEN a man then YES I would think that the MAN has the right to protect himself. Even if this means hitting the woman back.

A little known fact exists in domestic violence situations. A woman often hits the man first and provokes the man to strike the woman. Since men are generally physically larger and stronger than women, the woman receives a worse injury. I'm not passing judgement here. But, there have been studies to prove this out. Women more often hit first.

(wish I knew where I read and heard it)

Tough question you are asking here, but in all honesty, if a woman walks up to me and hits me like a man-you bet your a** that I will hit her right back (yes, I have been in this situation before-some nasty bars where I grew up)!!!! As a general rule though -- NO, I believe that a man should not hit a woman (defending yourself against hostile acts is a totally different thing all together!!)

Well every good gentlemen is brought up to never hit a woman ever. BS I'm not an advocate for hitting anyone but if you have ran away, tried talking her down, tried controling the situation and it's not working and your back is against the wall and she is coming at you and the only option you got left is to punch her.. Go for it. As for a cop hitting a woman, they have alot more options available. Their job is to control and restain the suspect and use force as a last option.

If your question is based on morality, I would say it is generally not "ok" for a man to hit a woman, or for anybody to hit anybody, for that matter.

If your question is based on legality, well, it depends on the circumstances, and where you live. Here in Florida, with the "zero tolerance for domestic violence" laws, it is likely that BOTH parties would be arrested and charged with assault.

The circumstances will always play a major part, however. Are you talking about self-defense here? Does the woman have a weapon, etc.? There are too many variables to answer this question with a simple "yes" or "no" kind of response.

IMO, under most circumstances, if somebody assaults you, you have a free pass to massively react and beat them within an inch of their life.

But each situation needs to be treated uniquely. Like when my wife used to hit me (typical violent woman who needed to be civilized), until I made her understand that the next time she hit me, she'd wake up in a hospital, if at all. I did not want to hit her back.

Since women are generally smaller than men, if a woman assaults me, I would consider breaking her nose and jaw, providing there are witnesses to attest that she attacked me first.

People who assault others need to learn the hard way to stop doing so.

The chances that a groin hit is the most effective way to stop a female attacker is pretty slim. Most men don't use groin hits on each other in a real self defense fight, because an attacker is going to minimize that target without thinking about it.

It is never ok to hit anyone, no matter what the gender. A woman has no right to hit you as you have no right to hit a woman. It is assault either way.

Is it legal? Yes, self defense is your constitutional right in the United States if the situation requires such an action.

Is it right? That depends on the level of force. If a woman smacks you, it may not be advisable to turn her face into a puree' of flesh.
