I don't know what qualifies as memory, but when I kept oscars, they recognized me as the one who fed them and got excited when I came to the tank at feeding time. Anyone else just got an interested stare for a few seconds and then were ignored.

Most of my fish know where, in the tank, I am going to drop the food and will congregate there looking up for the food coming down.

I think the bigger the fish, the more chance there is of a memory due to a larger brain (by volume) and probably more development as far as memory.

Most of the smaller fish probably only have reactions to stimuli rather than an actual memory. Remember Pavlov's dogs drooled when he rang a bell... that was not memory, that was reaction to a stimulus. Although, dogs have excellent memories. I only mention Pavlov because he accessed a primitive part of the brain that small fish probably haven't gotten beyond.

IMHO.

Yes, fish have memories and they last throughout the lives of the fish. Like people, they certainly forget some things; but they can remember certain things for all their lives.

There was an experiment conducted to disprove the 3 second memory myth. They kept a bunch of goldfish in a nice, happy goldfish tank, with a plastic 'monster' on the bottom. The fish didn't notice it, of course. Then they had the monster activate and freak out the fish. Then the monster was removed. 6 months later, the moster was put back in the tank and even without it moving, the fish were afraid of it. Same thing happened several years later.

It all depends on what you want them to remember :) But marking or consistent events such as fright, feeding at a certain area of the tank, one person who always feeds etc will be remembered for years.

Their memory lasts for as long as they keep it dry. In other words, since we descended from fish, the same as with people.

Fish must have memories because my two clown loaches know where their little hidey holes are to go back to when they have had a swim round the tank and all the fish know that when the little flap lifts on top of the tank that daddy is going to feed them.

fish are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. fish will usually come to the same spot to be fed when they see their owner coming to their bowl or tank. fish have learned to swim through mazes like mice run through mazes for food on the other end. there was a clip of a video on youtube of a fish that was trained to ring a bell to get fed.

There is a belief that Goldfish only have a memory of three seconds... this is false and scientific studies found they have a memory of at least three months

They must have some sort of long term memory, my goldfish always get excited when I come near their tank. Short term maybe not so much.
