what is a good temp to keep the thermostat on in the winter?

There are many things to take into consideration. First, you have to think of your own "comfort zone". Do you like it hot, warm, or cool? Second,, consider your home. Is it an apartment, and if so, what floor? Heat rises, and if you're in a unit that's upstairs and have neighbors on both sides, you can leave your thermostat lower as the radiant heat from the units around you will keep you warmer. How well insulated is the home, is it drafty or fairly airtight? I live in an older house that has a lot of drafts, so I need to keep it cranked up a bit more just to maintain a livable temp in the house. Also, consider the plumbing. Is it new, old, insulated or not, under the house, in the rafters (I've actually seen this). In the colder months, plumbing can be a huge consideration. My pipes froze the other night, fortunately they didn't break.
After considering all of these variables, if it's more for economic reasons, then I'd say to keep it a bit cooler, like around 65 degrees F, and wear warmer clothes.
I know this seems a bit long winded, but there's really no short simple answer that'll really be accurate with so little to go on. I hope this helps.

It depends on where u live, what kind of heat u use... alot of people mess with their thermostats, I don't occasionally I may lower it if I'm going out of town. But our utilities are so low, I don't bother. I have friends who have their thermostats set to timers. They lower them when everyone is sleeping... I don't. We spent extra on thermopane windows, extra insulation, energy efficient applicances, roof etc... which has more than paid for itself and I get a small discount from the electric company each month.

I'm all electric so I keep the temperature set at 70 so that my kids can run around in shorts and bare feet. If were going away for long vacation, I will set it back to 65 and unplug everything out of the wall sockets but I usually don't mess with it.

One of the best things is my celing fans run around the clock. I set the switch to winter mode and it pushes the heat from the ceilings down. In the summer mode, it moves the air to circulate and cool in the opposite direction.

Gas/propane heat is usually quite warmer than electric.

68 degrees Fahrenheit. According to an electrician in my family it is more cost effective to leave the thermostat at a constant temperature than to turn it down at night or when you are gone. He claims you use more electricity when you are always adjusting the temp.

68 to 70 degrees. If the house is going to be empty during the day you might want to time the temperature to around 76 degrees when youre out.
