It's interesting that the Romans had an empire before they got an emperor. An empire is a state in which the central government rules over several nations. In modern English, an emperor is a monarch who rules an empire.
The Roman Empire started when the city of Rome expanded a rule over all the cities and peoples of Italy about 400-200BC. Beginning about 200BC, they conquered the city state of Carthage in North Africa. About 145BC they conquered Greece. They absorbed Egypt about 20BC. Soon after, they ruled the whole rim of the Mediterranean, plus Britain, and as far East as the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, as far North as the Rhine and Danube.
The Roman Empire lasted in Europe till about 480AD. The empire continued in the East with capital at Constantinople, under the name of the Byzantine Empire. The Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453, and the Byzantine Empire ended.
The first Roman emperor was Octavius Caesar, nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar. He accumulated power slowly and indirectly, allowing the Roman senate to vote him various offices and powers over a period of years. One of the powers they voted him was the maius imperium, "the great power," for life. The holder of such power was called an imperator. The English word emperor comes from that. (In German, an emperor is a kaiser, which was the pronunciation of Caesar.)
The maius imperium was the power to punish Roman citizens with whipping or death without a trial. The senate routinely voted it to a general leading an army into foreign parts. The general had to have the power to punish deserters or disobeying orders on the spot. The general's power expired when he got back to Rome. Octavius was voted it for life.
Other titles voted to Octavius included tribune-for-life, Augustus (the great one), and Princeps (first man in the state). Our word prince comes from that. When Octavius Caesar Augustus died, the senate voted all of his powers and titles to his nephew Tiberius. So Tiberius became the second emperor (imperator).

The Roman Empire was a large Empire about 1500 hundred years ago. If you need information for a project I would suggest trying a neutral information website like wikipedia.org or even just an encyclopedia. Though if you need to make a poster, without any details, I would suggest an army recruitment poster. The Roman army was one of the most powerful at the time, and it was a huge part of early Roman culture.

The Roman Empire gave our society a great many things starting from the Government to military. For your poster you could do a timeline of the different governments or rulers....It is a truly wonderful subject and should be reviewed in great detail before you make your decision! If you have HBO watch Rome that will give you a great understanding of what it was like during the Roman times. the first season covers Guias Julius Caesar from 38BC to 34BC and the second season covers Marc Anthony's rule as well as Augustus Caesar whom is Octavian of the Julites [Julius Caesars adopted son] And the Roman Empire was one of the strongest Republics during its time, they ruled over many lands including Egypt. Good luck to you!

The Roman Empire is the third phase or type of government Latins had in their Italic peninsula, during their history, from 753 BC (founding of Rome) to 476 AD (fall of Rome)
That is about 726 years.
1° phase.- From 753 to 350 BC Latins had Kings
2° phase - From say 351 to around 29 BC they had a Republic with some type of democracy copied from Greece.
3° phase - From 30 BC after the assassination of Julius Cesar, until 476 AD
(when Barbarian Chief Odoacro conquered Rome), there reigned the EMPIRE with its approximately 55 Emperors.
