I do not trust a jeweler to not take the ring, say they never received it, or switch out the stones. What options do I have to get it appraised? Can I write a letter indicating that the jeweler received the ring and have them sign off on it? Would this be enough evidence in case something were to happen?

Why not just make an appointment where you can sit right there?

Dear Friend,
I am a jeweler by proffesion.
Never give a jeweler a ring to appraise. You should always consult independent or individual Certified Appraisers to have your piece of Jewelry Appraised. Most jewelers are not thieves and will never do somthing wrong for which thier reputation will be at stake. A proffesional jeweler will always examine your ring before hand and will write down what he notices and give you a copy of it. If your ring is a diamond ring with a center diamond in it you should first ask your jeweler to show you certain visible characteristics on it like a included crytal or a feather, so when you get it back you can look it up again before accepting it. The same applies with oither stones too. If there is any helf you need in appraising or consulting or buying a new piece of jewelry you could write me at kunalsc@yahoo.com.

I'm sorry, but most reputable jewelers are NOT thieves. You can't get a ring appraised without a jeweler looking at it.

They wouldn't be in business if they stole from their prospective customers. They usually give you a receipt that they received the jewelry from you for an appraisal, as well as the cost for the appraisal. YOU need an identifying slip of paper in order to pick up the piece from them after they have appraised it, because they aren't going to just give out a piece of jewelry to someone without a claim receipt.

I have never had a jeweler need to keep my ring to have it appraised. A good jeweler should be able to look at the ring while you are there and guess its worth. I suppose a really accurate pricing might take more time though. I am always weary of what they tell me because I feel like like it's less than what I could actually get for it.

You don't leave the ring with the jeweler. You sit there while they take their little magnifying eye-thingy and take a look at the stone. They tell you what it's worth right there. If the one you visited won't, find another one.

when you give the ring to the jeweler then they have a duty to you to take care of your ring and are responsible for its safekeeping till it is returned to you
