Fundamentally, either one -- since half the world is in day and half the world at night, neither one ever goes away. Arbitrarily, we state night comes first since it would be inconvenient for the date to change in the middle of the day.

According to the way we keep our calendars and clocks, since the day begins at midnight, night comes first. If you're talking about the beginning of the universe, the universe was filled with nothing but radiation at first so even though there was no planet to experience night or day, you could say day.
