Godlfish will get along together just fine so long as they are close in size. However, realize that each fish requires at LEAST 10 gallons of water. So if you have a 55 gallon...5 fish MAX. And be prepared for water changes every week.

If you do it right the only extra expense is that you need a heater for tropical fish, an extra $20-40. Either goldfish or tropical should be in a fairly large tank. I started with a one and a half gallon tank with a goldfish 3 years ago, and I'm very soon having to upgrade the tank, for the third time, to a 20 gallon, because its gotten so big. At the same time I also started a 20 gallon tropical tank, and have maintained an average of 13 fish at a time. I like the variety of fish that you can keep in the tropical tank together. I have a Dalmatian Molly, a guppy, 2 platys, 4 cories, and few others. You can get really colorful, community fish, and keep alot of them at the same time. The goldfish are good, because they are happy to see you. Mine always comes to the front of the tank and gets all happy and stuff. Whichever way you decide to go, visit a Petco or Petsmart and talk to their fish person about starting a tank. Its not a difficult thing to do, but if you've never kept fish before, there is a little bit of science to it. Youll kill less fish if you do some research first. Good luck. Fish are pretty cool! Also, don't put goldfish with any tropical fish, they will eat them. My roommate put a goldfish in with the neon tetras, and it ate them all. My goldfish lives with a Spotted Dojo Loach, kind of like an eel about 6 inches long, ugly, but neat.

Goldfish are pretty hardy fish, they can live like 20 years or so given the proper conditions. They usually can live with any fish thrive in the same temperatures and water environment that they do. In other words, cool water- nothing above 70-80 degrees. Ph is also an issue, they need 7.2- 7.6. Ammonia is a major problem as well. This is why a lot of fish die during the first 2 weeks in a brand new tank because there is not enough "beneficial bacteria" in the tank. Frequent water changes and be on the look-out for any changes in water quality such as cloudiness. Algae is not necessarily a bad thing but it you can't even see the fishes, then you might want to buy some products that can get rid of algae.
The most important thing about goldfish is that they need ALOT of space. They need about 40 gallons per goldfish, despite what you see in the pet stores and in carnivals.
Some fish that can live happily with goldfish are Platys and some loaches. I personally love clown loaches- get about 4 of them and you'll have hours of entertainment.
The more you know about goldfishes, the better off you'll be and the more healthier they will be. Hence, the longer they will survive. Good luck and have fun!

I personally have had both tropical and goldfish. I Love my goldfish! They have so much personality. Most different types of gold fish get along well with each other. You can ask the store that your getting them from (assuming your getting a store bought fish, i've had the wild ones and their immune systems arent as strong) which would be the best suited for each other. Gold fish are also harty and tolerate ph changes better than tropical fish. Just remember that they grow as big as the area their in and with how much food you give them (I had to find new homes for my first two gold fish becuz they out grew my tank!). If you want a social one, run your finger in front of the glass and see which fish follow it. Gold fish are cheaper that tropical and alot easier to care for

Goldfish are a bit like the labradors of the fish world - they're friendly, communal, not all that territorial, don't give two figs about anything ... but are also quite greedy!
As a very general rule - other communcal fish tend to have their mouths face down or up. The aggressive ones - such as cichlids have 'forward' facing mouths.
So loaches (like the clown loach and coolie loaches), corries, placys, tetras are all good tank-mates.
But get a couple of goldfish as they do like to kick around with each other. The same is the case with all the above fish types too!
Hope this helps.

Goldfish put out a lot of Amonia everyday so it is best to keep them just as a school of the same kind. I love my goldfish! I had bought them to feed a very large Oscar and they turned out too big for him so I moved them to another tank and they have thrived. They are now about 5 inches long each and live with a Plicostomus who keeps the tank floor clean.
I have to change the carbon filter twice as often as the other tanks because of the amonia but they are worth it! These fish have more personality than any fish I have owned! I have 3 tanks right now and one is a 55 gallon tank but they are my favorite.
I call them my "golden retrievers" cause they act like big fluffy puppys when I feed them.
Have fun and enjoy your pets!

Well, I have alwas had goldfish and Koi.. Everytime you put in new fish with old they fight.. and the size...
One before, We had 5 goldfish and 2 koi.. then a year later, my mom bought a new baby koi and they attach her and ate her.. I think you shouldn't put new ones together so only the ones at the same tank in the shop.. or at least the same size..

Goldfish are very docile, peaceful fish. They do fine with any other peaceful fish. The pet store should have their fish "rated" by aggression level. Most peaceful fish will live fine together, just don't add semi-aggressive or aggressive fish to the mix.
