I am highly interested in ecology, I have always loved nature and just being outside, or studying whats out there and so on...
If I pursue environmental sciences, though, will I be stuck lecturing biology or something--- is there much of a future in ecology?

And how can this field be modified/specialized: how can I expand or branch out a base in ecology for special interest?

A variety of options. My wife got specialization in ecological sciences and works as a nature interpreter at a nature center, tromping around outside. Depending upon other areas you might be interested in, there also are several "flavors"; ecologists can look at one or more animals and/or plants, or look at the effect of environment (read: GLobal Warming) on one or more plants/animals, etc. etc.
