S= number of stuffed animals Sally has
J = number of stuffed animals Jami has

S+J = 42
S = J-12

substitute the second equation into the first:
(J-12) + J = 42
J + J -12 = 42
2J = 42 + 12
2J = 54
J = 27

27 - 12 = 15 = S

Sally has 15 and Jami has 27

Let's set up an equation. We know that Sally (s) and (+) Jami (j) have (=) 42 stuffed animals. Let's write this as:

s + j = 42

OK? Now we also know that Sally (s) has (=) 12 fewer (-12) than Jami (j). Let's write this as:

s = j - 12 (Because what ever j (Jami) has if you take 12 less than that you have Sally's)

We have two equations:

s + j = 42 AND
s = j - 12

Let's use what's called the Substitution Method. We need to solve one of the equations for either variable. And then substitute that value in the other equation for that variable.

The second equation is already solved for s. So let's use that value for s (j - 12) and substitute that for s in the first equation like this:

(j - 12) + j = 42

We can lose the parenthesis because nothing is attached to it.

j - 12 + j= 42

Let's combine like terms:

2j - 12 = 42

Let's add 12 to both sides to undo the -12:

2j - 12 (+ 12) = 42 (+ 12) Notice the -12 and +12 on the left cancel

2j = 54

Finally to get j by itself let's divide both sides by 2.

2j(/2) = 54(/2) Notice the 2's on the left cancel

j = 27

Now we know Jami has 27 stuffed animals. Let's plug that value in for j in either of our original equations.

The first one looks easier.

s + (27) = 42

To get s by itself let's subtract 27 from both sides.

s = 15

Now we know Sally has 15 stuffed animals.

Plug these values into both equations to check your answers:

s + j = 42
(15) + (27) = 42?
42 = 42 YES

s = j - 12
(15) = (27) - 12?
15 = 15 YES

You're done Sally has 15 stuffed animals, Jami has 27 stuffed animals. Hoped that helped, Good Luck in your Math

Let x be the number of animals that Jami has, then x-12 is the number that Sally has and

x + x-12 = 42
2x = 54
x = 27
x-12 = 15

so, Jami has 27 and Sally has 15...

S + J = 42

S = J - 12

So...

(J - 12) + J = 42

J - 12 + J = 42

2J = 54

J = 27

So...

Jami has 27

Sally has 15
