There's the sushi resturant in my town that is normally a sit-down resturaunt, but you can also ask for a to go order. i order, and then leave for 10 minutes and then come back and pick it up. by then it is ready/just about ready. i always pay with a credit card and there's a section for tipping, but should i leave a tip if i'm not getting sit down service?

Of course not. You want to tip them because they did the job their paid to do? Think a little.

Most people I know don't, but I usually do. It's takes them a couple of minutes to put your order together, and if it's a server doing it, it's taking them away from their normal 'tip worthy' job. I have also found that if it's a place I take out from frequently, the food comes faster and the service is friendlier if they know you're a tipper. I generally won't give more than $3-$5 though.

I just wanted to add that ... yeah, you ARE being served. You don't tip at a fast food joint because that's ALL they do - that's their purpose - fast food: there IS no wait service. Ordering from a sit-down restaurant is different. Someone - usually either the bartender or a server - is taking time to fix your food up - time away from their regular job. As pointed out above, even if there is someone whose sole job it is to get the to-go orders ready, they get paid less than minimum wage. Throwing someone a dollar or two shouldn't be that big of an issue. If you can't afford to tip, don't eat out.

No. It's no different than walking into a McDonald's or any other fast food establishment during the lunch/dinner rush. At these times, you sometimes have to wait 5-10 minutes anyways.

Try paying in cash the next time and get a receipt after you pay. Look at the cash receipt and see if there's a section for adding a tip. Probably not. The tip line is pre-programmed into the computer, basically for the customers who throw the tip in with a credit card payment after a sit down meal.

Would also recommend putting a zero or line through the tip section when paying for takeout (or not leaving a sit down tip). Unless you remember and monitor all of your transactions, whose to stop someone from adding a $20.00 tip after you've signed, and the tip line is still empty?

I switched over to Thai.

I really wish EVERYONE in the world could work in food service for one day. Then everyone would be a better tipper and complain less.

Anyway,

I don't think you should tip the same as sit down service, but I think you should leave something. (Maybe $2 per person that you're ordering for.) In full service restaurants, whomever is taking your order is still earning that $2 & change an hour and every little bit helps. Don't be Mr. Moneybags, but you don't have to overdo it.
If you're a regular, they'll appreciate it and try to find some little thing to pay you back (extra items, super fast service, sweet table when you dine in.)

My suggestion is to tip. If this is a consistent restaurant you order out from and it is ready/just about ready for you then you should tip them. Would you tip the typical 15 to 20 percent. Probably not. I would keep it at the lower end of 15% (or below). The people at the counter or hostess makes a percentage off of tips from the waitresses. Therefore, the tip you leave is for her concern and timing of your order - specifically saying - Thank you for making sure my order got in, that I have napkins, and etc.

This is GREAT questions! Yes, a small tip should be given. By doing so you are thanking the person for providing perfect service. By this I mean that your order is correct, all the condiments are included and the employee is extra friendly. If you fail to tip employees will not rush to complete your order and may not be as attentive. Remember that most servers make their money from tips, not their hourly wage. If you do not tip they will want to spend their time on guests dining in the restaurant who will. This does not include fast food drive through as the person at the window is assigned to that task and does not expect tips.

I always do. I worked at an Outback Steakhouse and there was always one person who's only job was to get the to go orders ready for pick up. It was a full time job and they only made the $2.34 the other waitresses/waiters made. These people rely on tips too. (I wouldn't say it has to be 20%, but it should be at least something.)

Generally, no. But if you feel the service is excellent it is acceptable to tip. I would do it every now and then, but not on all to go orders. There is no wait staff serving you, that is the purpose of a tip.

I usually do not, that is the beauty of take out. I used to work in a very upscale resturaunt, and the owner used to frown upon us taking tips from take out orders. Actually, he hated take out orders altogether, so maybe he is not the best source.

Absolutely not! Tipping is only for sitting down and IF ONLY the service received is worth tipping. people often mistake it for a mandatory thing, but it's not. I only ever tip if I've received good service.

I do because it's a cost of convenience. The host or hostess who hands you your bag is not making that much. And you get food handed to you all packaged up.

Be nice and leave a couple bucks.
