Well I'm a teenager trying to get a job, because I have nothing to do right now. My previous employer was just a grocery store. I was there for about a year. I'm worried that she's talking crap about me when possible employers call her for a referecne. So I've got this idea to call her as another grocery store asking about myself. Sound good? I'm using a cell phone.. verizon. Can I block my number?

We called from my cell phone and she just said the store doesn't give out references or whatever, only the corp. office does.

Sure can. Dial *67, then the number. You might consider having a friend do it, though. Otherwise you might get caught... then you really will have given them something to say to potential employers..

You can't block a cell phone so you might want to have someone else do it for you on a landline which can be blocked by using *67. Also, someone else mentioned telling prospective employers that you left previous employment on bad terms: DON'T DO THAT! Never, ever, ever bad talk a previous employer (even if you suspect they're doing it to you). It sends a signal to the prospect that you are immature and may even be a problem employee for them. Your previous employer should not be verifying anything other than the dates that you worked there and what your title/duties were, nothing else. Tell the prospect that the previous job just wasn't a good fit (or didn't work out) after a year and leave it at that. Good luck to you on your job hunt! :)

i would have a friend do it, preferably a girl so she won't be suspicious.

you can always tell a future employer that you would prefer they not contact your previous employer. sure, it looks bad, but let them know that your termination was on poor terms and you fear they may speak poorly of you if contacted. then, simply explain to the interviewer what happened and try to portray it in the best light as possible.

if you were a screw up at your last job, though...then learn your lesson and realize that even though "it's just a grocery store" that it is a business and deserves a certain amount of respect. it may not be your dream job, but it's an important job to many other people and therefore you should show them respect by respecting your job.

every job you get, you should take seriously and treat it as if it's a gift.

take care

p.s.
if she is saying bad things about you, then you can use that as your reason for not wanting your future employer to contact them. just state that you have found she is giving poor references and that you know it's against the law and you feel that if she is willing to break a confidence like that then you have no idea what kind of lies she may tell about you.

Almost every company has a policy of NOT giving references other than confirming salary and dates of employment. Giving a "reference" can make a company liable for a lawsuit, and most companies have this policy to protect themselves.
Therefore, if your previous employer was not the owner of a small independent grocery store, you have little to worry about.
In the meanwhile, type up a list of personal references, (teachers, clergy, etc) and hand it in with your application. Make sure you have the permission of these people, of course. It will be helpful to you.

Sometimes people just aren't what you'd expect them to be, and they can be two-faced evil demon people. But I think the real question should be "Why do I care so much about my teacher and the number of marines she's been with or whatever".......was this even a question or were you just ranting?

I did this one time. But I got a friend to call for me - didn't want anyone to recognize my voice.

If you are getting a bad reference, be honest with yourself about why and try to do better next time.

Can't block a cell. You should have someone else call for you just in case they reconize your voice. I'll call for ya...LOL

The best thing to do now is to ignore her and her blabberings totally. If she comes to know that you are unduly worried about it she will continue to do so.
