I just don't think there's any way Paula, Randy, and Simon see all 10,000-20,000 hopefuls that show up!
So, what really happens at an American Idol audition? Is there preliminary production assistants that you must audition for? Do they only let the really bad and decent to excellent through to the televised judges?

Yeah, they deffinatly do NOT see alot of people. Most have to audition for a few different people before it is decided if they will actually get to SEE the real judges. So them saying that one city has very little talent really isn't fair, since they pass up ALOT of talented people, just to take some people that would bring in ratings from audition week because they really cannot sing and they dress really horribly. Basically people that would get a laugh, they will take over someone that looks average and sings really well. It's sickening, but that is really how it works, and obviously it works.

They see all of them. Even if they have to be in town for a day or 2. But you got to have your application complete and in by a certain time/date or you will not be able to audition. You have a certain amount of time while you are in the audition, like 2 minutes to show your stuff and that's it. I've noticed that when they show you clips, they only show bits and pieces and not necessarily in the right order either. They show you what they want you to see and it makes you perceive their audition good or bad even. A person could have sing 2 or 3 songs, but only show you the worst one to make you think they were a bad singer. or in some cases they show you their best song and then show the judges turning them down.. Making you think they where really good, but you didn't see the whole audition. They only showed that one song good, but all the others were bad. And that's the magic of TV.

Yeah they don't see all the hopefuls that showed up. Actually, the hopefuls will have to audition for the Executive Producers first before getting to the judges. I recall that last season, Elliott Yamin mentioned it shortly on the show that he nearly couldn't even get through the Executive Producers or something like that.

funny you should mention this. i just read on msn the other day about a woman who went undercover and tried out for idol. the three judges don't see all the contestants. there are judges that pick people who are good for tv beforehand and send the others packing to go home. it was a really interesting article. i think the msn girl was peeved she didn't get to meet the main judges, but hey that's how it goes i guess.
i can't find the article sorry, maybe look on msnbc.com to find it

It would be impossible for the main judges to see everyone. It would take them weeks, not a few days, in every city. I believe the person that read the msn article, it makes sense - grab the people that will be entertaining (i.e. really really bad or really really good) and reject the rest.

I'm pretty sure Steven would say something like "Damn, I should've done that..". Randy would probably freak out like he does sometimes, like when Steven said "Well hell's fire, saves matches, **** a duck and see what hatches." They wouldn't show it on TV probably
