Sure can . I chose what I loved that was collecting dolls. I had to go more detailed in their history then and now, I'll never forget it, try it, they might enjoy it? Their love motorcycles, clothes, let them tell you. Everyone is different. You might be suprised to learn something too.

I once had to make a movie for Social Studies (a propaganda movie for anything of our choice) and one for English (we had to make a documentary of the national debate competition). These were both excellent assignments. They were pretty intensive and time-consuming, but we got to pour our own creativity, heart and souls into them to make them work. We got to use different skills and learn about (fairly practical) things we wouldn't have otherwise. Of course, not every family has a camcorder, but if you can team up there are usually enough to put together a decent clip. Each movie had to be between 5 and 10 minutes long, accompanied by a presentation. Maybe your class could do the movie all in French or something.
If it has to be an assignment that each student must do on his or her own... I think maybe an independent study. I wrote a 60-page paper on Coca-Cola's marketing and popularity. I had to pick a subject related to the class (in my case Economics) and do my own research on it. The paper had to have a practical component as well as the theoretical bit. The paper had to be presented in front of students and teachers (ok, that was rough) and the presentation needed to be informative and interactive.
Sorry, my school wasn't really that creative. :p If I think of something else I'll let you know.

I only took French in high school for 2 years, and I really enjoyed a French Village project that we did. We had to construct a small-scaled version of a french village, complete with at least 5 different shops. We had to label each shop correctly and include at least 4 items that would be found in each. We also had to label various other parts of the village. It was fun because we got to be creative, and using visual objects really helped me remember a lot of the words.
We also did something where we had to write a short play in french and then perform it for the class. I really liked the projects that allowed us to be as creative as possible.

I took french for four years in high school and two in college. My fav. project we ever did was designing a tour vacation. We had to act as a travel agent and tour guide to design a week long trip for a group of 5-10 people. We had to research where we would take them and why. This included dining, shopping, history, travel, etc. We then made a brochure advertising the trip and wrote up a report. I learned a lot and had a blast. It was also very useful when I visited France because I knew just what I wanted to see!

I was in a class where we sat on the computer the whole period of the class and one day I did a powerpoint on any one of the countries in the world. I did Puerto Rico b/c at the time my boyfriend was from there and I wanted to know more about the country itself and then luckily I passed a 100 on there and it was also fun and powerpoints can really teach you different things and you can put music on there and any type of sounds and whatever you wanted and thats what classes need to be about is fun and learning. You should do something like that about something French. That would teach the kids everything there is about French

Yes, actually, our arts and crafts teacher told us to put paper mache on our genitalia to make sculptures. She was fired for some reason a couple of years later. I miss her : (
