The Guardians 'Ignopedia' column covered this brilliantly recently. when asked to explain celebrity,
'Celebrity
(Requested by reader)
A celebrity is a fellow human being who is better than you because lots of people know who they are. Everyone loves celebrities. Even people who claim to despise celebrities would, if they were honest, prefer to share a drizzly afternoon picnic with Kate Thornton than spend one more second in your revolting non-celebrity company.
If George Clooney called a globally televised press conference, then plucked out two of his eyelashes and announced he would donate them free of charge to the first viewer to turn round and murder their entire family, thousands would perish. Read that again. It is a fact.
Celebrities themselves are rarely evil. Several have talent worth celebrating. Curiously, this is rarely discussed in media coverage, which instead concentrates on how fat their thighs are in order to make regular people, driven to the brink of despair by their adulation of celebrities, feel momentarily better about themselves, and sufficiently robust to stave off suicide long enough to digest further celebrity coverage.
Any member of the public who voluntarily pays to read magazines stuffed with candid photographs of celebrities walking down the street clutching shopping bags is suffering from an acute form of mental illness that hasn't been diagnosed yet, but surely will if there is an atom of hope left in the world, because a civilian flipping through Heat in their lunch break is the human equivalent of a cow being stunned by a captive bolt pistol prior to slaughter - except the cow, at least, dies for a purpose.'

A celebrity is a person, who often has clouded judgement, and unacceptably low intelligence, below the Average adult standards. This may have to do with all the fame, and money getting into their heads. Celebrities may have been intelligent, and had clear judgemental skills before, but that situation is totally reverse once they achieved fame.
Too add to "rakshet s's" comment.
Celebrities may not control a high degree of media and public attention, because that can only be done by a few individuals, becuase if you got all celebrities controlling high public and media attention, it would not be high anymore because the portion of attention would seem equal.

A celebrity is someone who is well known nationally and internationally. Jade Goody who got pouplar by being thick and brainless in BB3 is not classed as a celebrity because she is only well known in the UK. Jermaine Jackson and Dirk Benedict are no doubt celebrities because Dirk was in a hit show and Jermaine was in the Jackson Five. Shilpa Shetty is also well known because she has fans all over the world! The others I am not quite sure about.

People that gain celebrity status for being a nothing.Or appearing in reality shows, being seen in the company of the rich and famous like Victoria Beckham who is famous for being David Beckhams wife!
Made up by the media in order to sell magazines push ratings through the roof on the shows and be very obnoxious.
Some thing I am unable to figure is why we are obsessed with the world of the A list celebrity, we need to look like them have their life style read about all what goes on in their life good or bad, to me this is really boring surely our own life is enough.

Celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. The word stems from the Latin adjective celeber meaning famous or celebrated.
Another opinion is that a celebrity is some one who constantly craves attention, in the case of those that frequent BB they do in a most degrading, pathetic way - its like driving past road kill, you just can't help taking a peak!!
