Funny you should ask. I just had an argument with my mom about this two days ago - I'm a 45 year old teacher who was IN NHS. To me, it hasn't done a THING to help or hinder my education, knowledge, contacts, etc. My mom was insistent that my 16 year old son buckle down and get A's so he can be a member of NHS (mom wasn't due to something beyond her control in the 1940's). My son is very smart and is perfectly capable of getting straight "A's" but he'll settle for "B's" and perhaps the occasional "C." He's into music and wants to be a music teacher, and he sees no point in NHS - contrary to popular belief, NHS does NOT award scholarships. It is an HONORARY organization (hence the name). It's kind of like being named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students" and whatnot - it's really nothing. Well, except the Who's Who people only do their thing to get unknowing kids and parents to buy a $60.00 book with their name in it (or a plaque or some such thing). Also, you can't "join" NHS; you have to be INVITED. Each school has a committee and a screening process before invitations go out.

Scholarships

Because it is an honor, and the first real step to recognized acheivement of academic excellence. If one were to dismiss it as something they don't need, then they are turning their back on the first step to further recognition.

NJHS skill not something to high schools. NHS does not even propose something. once you're a qualified candidate, its not purely b/c ur in NHS/NJHS. without NHS you will nonetheless have the service hours, sturdy grades, leaderdhip, and so on.
