There are a number of reasons why they may not say what you need to hear. One possibility is culture; many cultures are stoic about not expressing emotions typically for fear of appearing weak. Norwegian-Americans for example have quite the reputation for not being overly expressive.

Another possibility is that they are hoping to show you they love you without having to actually say it. It's a weird concept, but there are people like that. What they may not understand is that you need to hear it.

Finally, life is complicated, especially the older you get. There could be any number of personal reasons why they aren't as expressive as you would like.

What's important is that you tell them and show them that you love them. And if they remain unresponsive, then just flat out ask. Tell them how you feel. Tell them you'd like to hear it more often.

Good luck.

Some families just don't. I know that mine do all the time, but I dated this guy once that never said "I love you" to his family and they never said it to him. He never doubted his love for him, it was just something they never did. Weird...I would suggest if you want them to say it, say it to them first!
