First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong category, it gave me 2 choices, this or the weather!
This morning on my way to work, it was absolutely chucking it down with rain and very strong winds. I passed a field with sheep in it, probably about 40 or so of them. They were all laid down but dotted around the field. None of them were together, all on their own.
So my question is, why on earth don't sheep huddle together when the weather is so atrocious?
My job can be very tedious at times so Ive been pondering this on and off all day!!

Actually their thick wool is saturated with a water repellent oil known as Lanolin which keeps them dry and warm inside their thick wool. It is entirely possible that sheep do not huddle together for warmth because they literally don't need to. It may also be true that huddling together would actually cause them to overheat due to the fact that they really probably arent cold at all, let alone wet.. underneath that thick wool.

I thought the sheep-shaggers were all in Derby. Thats what the Notts Forest fans were saying, anyway. Whatever, I think you'll have protection under the Human Rights Act to persue the activity as long as you give ample guidance to the sheep about their rights and availability of trained counsellors. The persons who said the insult will, quite obviously, be subject to arrest, questioning, a criminal record and deportation if possible. The local council will divert funds from the Hospital in your area to set up a 'Sheep-shagger Awareness group' and appoint a representative to fight for your rights. You should expect compensation for the hurt and psychological damage the incident caused.

Wool on a sheep is soaked with lanolin, so water doesn't get through. They lie down to keep their less well-protected parts (legs etc) out of the wind & rain. Keeping apart enables the wind to dry them off more quickly once the rain stops.
They may be stupid, but in some ways they're quite bright!

they all have wool blankets. The water and wind does not touch their skin. They lay down so their legs can be warm too. Huddling together would not beneficial. Also - sheep are incredibly stupid creatures so don't look for any kind of thinking and planning from them.

because if they all huddled together the wool stays saturated and they get cold, being spread out lets the water "drain" from the wool and they stay warmer.
