Does the word ‘will’ relevant (correct) here? If not, then I think ‘would’ should have been used here. Can anyone tell me the reason behind that?

this person is making a statement in a definite way.(will)
would..would suggest more of a hypothesis
for scary re ice melting new york times yesterday had an article on islands appearing in what was thought to be land bridges, masses of tons melting fast, and now!

If this sentence were part of an explanation of the consequences of some hypothetical occurance then you might need "would". So, just to illustrate: "Let's say there is a catastrophic change in the Gulf Stream and Greenland current. What would happen? After a few years, ice at the polar caps would melt. Polar bears would become extinct." etc.

(take the shortest route on what you want to say)

or

The polar ice caps will have melted after a few years of_________________ .
