As in all poker games...the best hand (only using five cards) is a royal flush, (A-10 of any suit), followed by a straight flush (any straight in any one suit...56789 of spades), folled by four of a kind (four cards of the same value from each suit 4444*), followed by a full house (three cards of one value plus a pair 33399), next is the flush (all five cards of the same suit, but not in a straight AK752), the straight is next (all five cards in numerical sequence...A2345) followed by three of a kind (888**), then two pair (8833*), then one pair and finally high cards from A down to the 2. When two players each have the same basic hand (say two pairs) then the one with the highest denomination wins ...say I had two pairs...kings and fours...and you had two pairs...aces and twos...your aces are higher than my kings and you would win the pot...understand? As far as Texas Hold-em goes, it is a fairly straight forward game....each player is dealt two cards, and then makes a bet based on those cards (or if you want to bluff you can try to make others think your cards are better than they are) after the first round of betting, the dealer discards one card and then "flops" three face up on the table.... these community cards combine with the cards in each players hand to make the five card poker, best hand possible. Another round of betting then the dealer again discards one and then only "turn"s one face up, again a round of betting, then the dealer discards one and puts one more face up ("the river") ...these are all the cards avaible for the hand..a round of betting ensues and the one with the best five card hand wins...that is the basics...there are major strategies involved, some serious calculation of odds and a fair amount of luck...you should read up on it if you are seriously thinking about getting into the game.....several of the "World Series of Poker" winners have books on the subject..good luck!
