Actually that year it was Patrick Ewing at $18,724,000
Interestingly Michael Jordan was only at $3,850,000. He wasn't even Top 30. (I believe that was Jordan's first full season back from his MLB expedition)

Michael Jordan became the highest paid basketball player ever when he signed for $30,140,000 before suiting up for the 1996-97 season. This amount is to adequately compensate the years he played where his salary averaged 3 million a season which is not enough for a player of his caliber. The following season Jordan would again broke this mark in salary when he recieved $33,140,000 for the 97-98. :D Hope this helps.

Based on Salary per year, Jordan in his last two years in Chicago was paid over 30 millions each year, He signed a long term contract earlier in his Bulls career and as salary got inflated he was definitely not making market value. Over long term contract Kobe is pretty high but I do believe that Garnett overall sign a larger contract initial when he played with Minnesota.

MJ is the king, on and off the court.
At one point in his career, he was Top Paid Sports Athlete over Mike Tyson at $83.5 million a year.
This included his off court endorsements for Nike, Coke, McDix, Haynes, and Gatorade.
