An example of killing two birds with one stone: Say you have to read some books for school. You need to read one from a male author, and one book that was once filmed. So if you read "A time to kill", you're killing two birds with one stone. John Grisham wrote the book, and "A time to kill" is also a movie based on the book. Getting two things done in one effort.

Well, if I were a student and I was reading an historical fiction novel in history class AND my English teacher asked my class to write a book report on an historical fiction novel, by reading the novel for history AND using the same book for the English assignment would be considered "killing two birds with one stone."
The statement means to accomplish two goals by performing ONE act.
