I have a 2001 Silverado extended cab 5.3 v8 with boltons that gets 21 mpg, and it has 227,000 miles. Click the link below to see pics of it.
I had a 1994 silverado V6 that got 18 mpg with over 300,000 miles. I have had nothing but good experience with these two, and those mileage figures say a lot.
The guys above me are right!
Whatever you get, take care of it like you'll own it forever (even if you dont intend to), and it will be reliable.

For starters don't listen to anyone that tells you to buy a Toy! There crap. Both GM and Ford have great 4 door trucks. What you need to know is what size of truck. 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton? Gas or Diesel? My best advise for you is this! 1/2 ton (FORD)! 3/4 ton-GAS (GM)! 3/4 ton-DIESEL (FORD)! 1ton-GAS(GM)! 1ton-DIESEL (FORD). My reasons are the the following, the 5.4L Triton is a awsome engine and the F150 is just a great *** truck. The F250 is a good truck with the Powerstroke. But GM's 2500(3/4ton) trucks are great with the 6.0L gas Vortec. Same for the 1 ton trucks, it just depends on what kind of power trian you want. Personally I'm a FORD guy but I hate the HD trucks with GAS engines, specially the V10! Stay away from them. You get more for your money with Ford, but you'll just have to do the shopping. The 1/2 trucks offer the same towing capacties but the Ford offers more payload. When it comes to the HD trucks FORD has GM beet by a long shoot. As long as it's the Diesel. Personally I wouldn't buy a HD with a Gas engine. Just a waste. Both 4 door trucks are about the same size too! The cautionary problem with GM is that their A/C systems don't last long. This is a known fact, some people try to argue it but you can ask any A/C shop. Then theres 4WD! If this is a option then in the 1/2 tons there equal! HD trucks go with FORD they use the solid axle still. which is 10 times stronger then GM's IFS! Oh and the last thing is that Fords FRAMES are twice as stong as GM's. But hey its your truck, buy what you like. Make sure you drive the crap out of each one! Good luck !!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer the Fords. I like the designs and interiors. The new GM trucks are pretty good as well.
Stay away from the Nissan Titans, they have quality problems and bad fit and finish. The current Toyota Tundra is a joke for a pickup. The next Tundra is the most unoriginal and ugly thing in the world. Toyota basically bought an F-150 and a Silverado, took measurements and made the same thing on the Tundra but made it a little bit bigger. But now it just looks oddly big and strangely proportioned.

I've had better luck with Fords but bought a GM because I liked the looks and ride quality. My GM truck engine developed a knocking sound and other problems. It will be a long time until I can buy GM again. I think you are taking you chances either way. Maybe Fords have improved and maybe GM has corrected their problems.
Good Luck

I am a GM man my self but when it comes to trucks Ford is after all Ford tough. You can run a Ford in the ground and the damn thing will not die, and if you hear a ticking in it don't try and fix it just throw some oil in it and keep on trucking. Good luck.

"Better" is a subjective term. Everyone has their own opinion, just as everyone has a bellybutton! The best selling vehicle in the Country for the past several years has been the Ford F100 series pickups, but does that mean they are "better" than Dodge, GMC or Chevy? I don't know; I prefer the "big truck" styling of the Dodge (but then, I have always preferred Chrysler Corp. vehicles). Some people swear by their GMC or Chevys; others swear at them. All I know is, Ford is the best seller, Dodge are the best looking and Chevy and GMC make very capable vehicles. By the bye, you neglected the Toyota Tundra which is a hot seller and a huge success. Thanks. Good luck!

The longest lasting vehicle is the one you do regular maintenance on, period. I've seen 87 Toyota Tercels that ran better than 97 cars because the owners took care of them. The key is to get the vehicle that appeals to you. If you like it, you will take care of it, and it will run for hundreds of thousands of miles.
Having said that, I grew up a Ford man, and I'm partial to them. Don't know much about four door trucks (is it even a truck if it has four doors?) but I will say I'm no big fan of Chevy's I-5 engine.

I say Ford. My dad owned a Ford F-150 for a long time, and he never had any problems with it, and I thought it was a really comfortable ride for it being a truck. More space in it too. Ford trucks look nicer I think, and perform better quality wise. I say Ford is your best bet if you are looking for quality. GM's are a dime a dozen, watch out for those lemons!
Good luck!

i would have to say ford. they do offer a lot of features and they have a better towing capacity, especially if you get the new '08. ford has really worked on their new model and they have done a great job. it rides great and is very quiet, even the diesel. their crew cabs are more like luxury trucks then work truck, but they also have the capacity to be a work vehicle.

They both are good trucks. Most work trucks are either fords or chevy and obivisouly you dont like chevys. I would say fords and especially if they offer more for the money.
