Teen fiction, much like adult fiction can be generalized into sub categories of romance, sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries, etc.
The most popular themes right now are high fantasy such as Eragon.
I myself have been toying with the idea of writing a teen novel that might fall into the adventure/western category.

I think adventure or inspiration are the best themes for a teen novel. As a teen I loved page turners, but only ones without a lot of violence. Some good ones were My Side of the Mountain, Treasure Island, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows. I also liked stories when kids suffered from real problems, but managed to rise above and become better people. Some of my favorites were Six Months to Live, Girl of the Limberlost, A Gown of Spanish Lace, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,Elizabeth Gail series, and The Acorn People.

Some of the most popular teen fiction books are those by authors such as Meg Cabot. Cabot's language is easily identifiable by teenagers, which make her themes--usually semi fatuous ones of self-discovery--more palatable. Random pop culture references also engross the readers...kids aren't looking in teen novels for life changing messages. They want to be entertained. So entertain them

Science Fiction....Try reading Maxium Ride by James Patterson...its a great teen read! It is an excellent example of how to keep a teens intrest up. It has all the elements that work, Mystery, fast reading, it involves kids and they are always trying to avoid adults and they stick to themselves....this works
