Just because we are the most intelligent animals does not give us the logical inherent right to rule over other animals. We share 98.6% DNA with chimps, which places us extraordinarily close to them in nearly all facets. When will people face the facts: that we are merely a link on the evolutionary chain, and we have no right to domination of other species, at least logically.
If you want to make the argument that it's simply animalistic to kill and eat other animals, that's the argument I'll buy. However, this should apply across the board, so that humans must accept that they can be part of dinner just like any other animal.

Because as humans we are more highly evolved and are higher up on the food chain therefore we do not get eaten unless you have the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and come across a cannibalistic Serial Killer, but other than that I think you should be safe as I haven't heard of any cases of human flesh found in the corner butcher shop. As for killing of animals for meat that's the way civilization has worked for thousands of years and besides where's the fun in hunting down a tofu or veggie Burger?

Your question is truly great.... food(meat?) for thought!
Killing animals for food may perhaps be OK only if no other food is available. Sustaining own life is a higher natural priority than protecting another life.
And then comes the BIG dilemma... whether it would then by that logic be OK to kill another human being if no animal too is available for food.... if the situation arises, I believe that even that would happen naturally. The very thought of course is repulsive.
I think it is our responsibility as human beings with a higher degree of intelligence and understanding to so organize our affairs that we should not need to kill even animals for food.

There are no good answers really, but many people automatically believe it's OK because animals are supposedly of lesser intelligence than humans.

Animals are food. There is a food chain throughout all of the animal kingdom. Animals kill for sustenance -- to survive.
The coyote kills the jackrabbit. The lion kills the gazelle. The mongoose kills the cobra. It's just nature!

In some cases, it is. Like the Donner party and those guys that movie "Alive" was about.
Oh wait, those people were already dead.
There have been cases of sailors trapped at sea after their ships went down and lots were drawn to determine who would be killed so the others could eat him.

you make it sound like we are murderers. we only kill what we we eat. its all about managing the herd. its not that we kill for enjoyment but to keep us alive. can you imagine what would happen if we were all vegetarians? there would not be enough vegetation for all of us. we would not be the top of the food chain. there would be no food chain. then animals and humans would starve to death and fight to the death for food.
we need to hunt only for food and not for sport. i dont believe hunting for any animal just for the horns or tusks is acceptible.

It's not really that it's ok for you to eat animals. It's just that people think it's ok to kill animals and eat them. I think that a lot of people think that it's ok to kill an animal because they've been brought up eating animals. They also attach a higher value to a humans life.

We do not know that is ok for us to kill and eat animals, we just do it. We did not come with instruction manuals, we are trying to figure this out on our own pretty much.
