sorry to hear about your viral infection,it happens to us all at some time, and theres a few ways to sort out the problem
1)first and most obviously download a good anti-virus program, but before you do this run the microsoft dedicated program "malicous software removal tool"from http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx,and follow the instructions,if its a bad virus this will identify it and delete it
then download a good antivorus, this can be a free or trial version,i recommend you use the f-secure anti-virus trial version from http://www.f-secure.com/protectyourpc/,this is a 6 month trial so it will give you 6 months protection and in that time you can decide if you want to buy the full version, its around £30 for 1 years subscription
2) after applying for the trial you will get a e-mail with a download link in there, download the program and run the scanner, there are a few different scans you can do but you need to do the "full system scan",this will look everywhere for viruses, trojans, worms, spyware and rootkits,it may take a while depending on the amount of files and programs you have on your p.c but if theres a virus(which there is)f-secure will find it and remove it,removal of viruses and malware happens at the end of the scan so be patient it will delete it
3)hopefully the virus will be removed removing the need for a disc format, however make sure you keep a anti-virus program on your p.c at all times, before this trial finishes you must arrange for another anti-virus to replace it
4)also a few antispyware programs on your p.c will help keep it clean,i recommend spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html,and avg antispyware from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5,these will keep your p.c pretty well infection free combined with f-secure
any problems mate give me a e-mail and i will answer any questions
good luck mate

If you are lucky and can get to your desktop and your internet explorer still works then you can try to download and install a free anti virus.
If you can't then you can try a system restore which will restore your system to the last time it was updated. To which you may lose something but not everything.
This isn't the last known good config choice on boot up!
If none of that works then you have learnt the hard way that you need a good firewall, virus protection and spyware removal programs. Hope the choices above work :)
