These days a lot of students apply to college from high schools that do not rank their students, and others apply who are home schooled. If these kids have a "high GPA" how does the college know whether they actually know anything or not. The SAT is like a double check on whether the school grades and GPA mean anything. I was involved in one case where a home schooled kid was suing the college because she had been given A+ on every assignment she ever had since she was in home school 1st grade up to calculus. But her parents were suing the university because she was required to take SAT and they claimed she "didnt test well" on standardized tests and shouldn't have to take it. They wanted her to get a full scholarship on the basis of the grades they had given her! Pretty good deal if you could get away with it.

There is a big argument about how well SAT scores predict college success. But I notice that nearly all the kids who have really high SATs also have high GPAs in tough high schools, and the kids who did poorly in high school nearly all have low SATs. So they do measure something about academic skills.

SAT scores are sent to the three colleges that you tell them to send the scores to. And you can send them to additional colleges for a small fee.

The SAT measures how well you take the SAT! I would look through the CollegeBoard's website which should answer a lot of your questions. http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/about.html Also, pick up a book with strategies and practice exams. It's not bad for a sophmore, but you need to increase your score to get into a good college. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.
