A great philosopher once asked this question. "Why is man just dying to live, when he's just living to die?" "Nothing" is a state of mind. When a person comes to terms with the transient nature of his/her own existence it is then that they can realize the true nature of their being. Material nothingness is possible only through serious effort as even the most impoverished of people generally still have an item of clothing on them. Spiritual nothingness is easily achieved. It only requires an abandonment of hope.

Life can only be lived because you want to live. You are the one who must give it meaning, and you have to be alive to have any meaning at all. Therefore as long as you are alive, there will be meaning whether it's in the short term or the long term.
Also if you have nothing, then you need to work towards getting the things that make you happy. You can't just sit back and whine that you have nothing. You have to go out and GET something. The purpose of your life is to find your own happiness in the way that you see fit.

Your question presupposes that "having something" qualifies a reason for existing. Living is in itself a everyday phenomenon of countless experiences. The very ability to understand that I exist, and that my life is my own is something very real and personal. It separates us from all other forms of life that exist on this planet. Look at what the human person possesses naturally. Our senses open to us a world of sight, color and sound. These things mean something to us because we are able to appreciate it through our ability to understand that we are seeing, smelling, and hearing. Our ability to understand and feel provides us with a whole other world of sensation and experience. What would life be if we did not feel? Does not a smile or a tear speak to us greater than words? This interaction which we share commonly is one of life's greatest gifts. To have is meaningless, to be is meaningful. The unfortunate drama of modern times is that possessing goods is a sign of fortune and success, and that you become a better person for it. We all know that is false. How many of us come across people who are wealthy but are flamboyant, unhappy, or morally bankrupt? Having does not determine the integrity of an individual. Personal worth comes from what you attempt to make of yourself, or in other words how you define your own existence. I have always hated being compared to other people in different jobs I had. Numbers, statistics and career advancement were highly looked upon, yet many people who seemed dedicated to getting ahead, fulfilling goals and getting good "stats" were backstabbers, liars, undependable, etc. How can you compare me to that? Being ambitious is not bad, but I am not defined but what I can accomplished for gain, nor what I possess materially but how I act in accord to how I should. I may not have a lot, but I am a lot.

You have alot to live for! Think of traveling the world- places you want to go....
You were put here to do something - find out what!
I became a big brother and am helping the boy find his way... Volunteer at the animal shelter - do worthwhile things and the meaning will become clear!

Find purpose outside of yourself. and depression arrise from selfishness--the world fails to meet your expectations.
Stop thinking in terms of "you" and start serving others. Love and happiness are the things which every human is seeking, but they can only be found by travelling on the road of selflessness.

I think a lot of people are asking this right now - the world is a really tough place to be at this point in human history.
I guess I'd rather be here than....wherever you go if you're not here.
