When you're looking at an offensive player's performance, which do you consider to be the most important? Are there some that you totally disregard? I'm thinking of these ones specifically:

AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, HR, RBI, EqAvg, WARP3, Win Shares

Or others that you like or don't like?

OBP is easily the most important. If you got on base, then you didn't make an out. That is the idea of offense in baseball. The worst statistic in baseball is wins for pitchers. It s so arbitrary and can have very little to do with the pitchers performance in individual circumstances, ie a pitcher can pitcher great and lose 1-0, or pitch like crap and win 15-14. Makes no sense.

Most Important Stat In Baseball

I like one of the most underrated stats in the game; holds. It measures the value of a middle reliever and his ability to keep a team in the game whether ahead or trailing in the box score. Good Middle relievers are so hard to come by, and often hard to evaluate, so I think this a good measure of a middle reliever's ability.

I always feel that RBIs are an overrated stat. Players with hi RBI totals are benificiaries of other teammates success. If Johnny Damon or Derek Jeter dont get on base as often as they do, maybe A-Rod and Giambi dont drive in as many runs. That being said, OBP is (not as much lately) an underrated stat. The ability to get on base translates into a players ability to improve his team's chances of scoring runs.

Pitcher - WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched). This is how many guys you've allowed on base.

Offense - OPS (On-Base + Slugging). Shows you not only how often he gets on base, but what kind of pop he has in the bat. A guy with a good OPS gives the opposing manager and pitcher more heartburn than just a Batting Avg or On-Base Pct guy.

For pitchers: ERA and wins. You can have a marvelous ERA, but if you don´t win, you don´t have much value. And if you win with a high ERA you will suffer the same fate as Randy.

For batters: OBP. That means you are on base and giving your team a chance to score a lot. RBI´s depends on other people ability to get on base.

It is tough because it depends on the positon. It is easy to say wins for a pitcher, but if he is a closer then saves and blown saves is more important. If you are looking at a mid-relief pitcher then it is ERA or BAA (Batting Average Against)

As for hitting, you want your lead off hitters to have a great batting average, but more importantly you want on base percentage. If you are looking at the clean up hitters then you are looking for HRs and extra base hits. But, batting average is also important.

So, all stats are relevant to the game and each stat is more important depending on the situation on the game.

OBP is the catalyst for every other offensive statistic. If reasonably successful, the wins will come much more often than defeats. It seems the most logical.

Wins. All the other stats contribute to the W, but that is the only one that matters in the end.

The only important stat is the win column for a team, the rest of it is just numbers.

A pitchers era. Give me a great picther with a low era and other stats fall into place.
