Modern poetry is complete gibberish. Besides, even after earning a bachelor's in English and writing professionally for years, I'm of the opinion that if it doesn't rhyme, it's not a poem.

The general public doesn't "have time" for poetry anymore, I think that with the introduction of the "new age" where people can sit in from of a television or video game or computer and find entertainment we lost the desire to read in general. Poetry is ususally about feeling, and in a world where noone wants to express themselves let alone hear about someone elses feelings we've lost the love of poetry. I write poetry myself and i know that it is a fast dying genre, and it breaks my heart to see that because I've found poetry to be the best form of expressing myself without confrontation. I also believe that poetry should be taught more in schools. I have 4 children, my oldest is graduating this year, and as I recall she's only dicussed poetry a few times throughout the years. The teachers are being forced to do away with somethings in order to have time to teach other things.

Not all readers have lost interest in poetry, however, I would say that the majority of readers have because we live in a fast paced society of half hour sitcoms, and two minute videos. Poetry takes a little more time and concentration than reading the latest thriller. Also, people think of poetry as hard and take it way to seriously because of the way highschool English classes treat poetry. Most poetry isn't THAT hard to understand if you simply stop stressing over it. However most still see poetry as a chore rather than as relaxing enjoyable reading, so they read novels instead.

Readers haven't necessarily "lost" interest in poetry. There are so many readers who read and love poetry its amazing! I think what you might be trying to ask is, why doesn't it seem like poetry is popular any more? That, I can answer.
Poetry is, in a way, the voice of a generation. In years past, and most notably in the Victorian Era, poetry spoke of things that weren't common to speak of in society. One didn't speak of sex, but poetry could and did. Poetry also told stories, in a rose colored way, it spoke emotions, and visions....it made the common uncommon, and the different accepted. In our society, there is nothing that is taboo...nothing that isn't spoken of, written about, made movies of, etc. So poetry, now, is a more personal experience kind of writing. If you don't like the experience of the poet, then you normally don't look any further into it.

The readers have not lost the interest in poetry. Poetry is a luxary. Poetry gives new direction to life, therefore one must remain away from poetic field unless he/she becomes mature.

People are too busy and too self centered to read anything anymore, much less poetry. Poetry is someone else sharing the deepest parts of themselves. To truly enjoy and "get" poetry, you've got to slow down long enough to focus on something besides yourself.

Readers have lost interest in poetry because of pretentious lines such as these:
"In space and time, homesickness is the greatest enchanter that animates all phantoms."
Ridiculous.
