The chamois is a mountain goat found in the Alps. But these days a "chamois leather" is just a soft, supple piece of leather (or even synthetic material) used to polish chrome etc. when washing a car.

Origianlly leather from the Chamois, a deer like animal from teh mountains, it's soft and absorbent so used to wash and dry delicate surfaces. Now mainly a manufactured item and not the real thing.

Originally made out of a little deer, like the one on the Babycham (Baby Chamois) bottle, but I think they're more likely to be sheep or goat skin now. My ex was mortified when she worked at Halfords and I told her that. She even started saying about people buying shammy's at Halfords were bastards in her sleep once after insisting a 'Bambi' had just come in the bedroom door and I'd scared it off (in her sleep, of course).

The genuine article is the skin of a particular goat. Lot's of 'em are not, nowadays. The real thing is noticeably better for drying off your bodywork & glass.

the skin of a goat, but not all of them actually are.

The real ones are quite expensive.

And they will produce a sparkling shine on your windows or vehicular bodywork, if you are that way inclined.
