I have a 2003 Ford Focus with 70,000 miles. Recently its started to stutter a bit when I initially accelerate, from a complete stop. I've replaced the spark plugs and the fuel & air filters. Also I've used some good fuel injector cleaner additive, yet the problem still persists. What are the other things that could cause this to happen? Spark plug wires maybe? Is the fuel additive just not good enough to clean the injectors? Thanks for your help!

A few weeks ago the check engine light was on for a couple days.. then it turned off and I haven't seen it come back on yet. It was shortly after this that the car started stuttering..

Thanks for all your ideas so far, I really appreciate it. I didn't know Autozone would do a diagnostic for free, I think I'll take it there this afternoon and see what that says, and from there!

You are on the right path, always start with the basics. You have already done plugs, fuel & air filters. check your plug wires, then your induction system sensors, a sticking tps or maf sensor can also cause these problems.
I am not a beliver in additives. I think you will find your problem is in the ignition or induction system of your car. If you can not isolate and resolve the problem then I suggest visiting a ford service center.
best of luck.

Catalytic converter clogged? Timing belt?

Rummy, may be correct about sensors, but a vehicle newer than 1996 should throw a check engine code for bad sensors and just about anything else that could make a car sputter.. Is the engine light on? If so, have it read by an autozone, they will do it free of charge.

Will get back to you when I find out!(freakin' Fords!)OKAY I'M BACK.....replaced plugs,plug wires,coil pack &fuel filter...runs like new now!!

Fuel filter, broken distributor cap, fould plugs, cracked wires, broken rotor, bad gas, bad timing, cloged air filter.... its a pretty big list of possiblities. Any way you look at it you are going to have to take it to a professional to be checked out.

First two things to check: TPS and fuel pump output - pressure and volume. Bad news is that ford on-board computers are calibrated so that they don't set a code in case of a malfunction...

O2 sensor, don't know if your car has one but mine went out on my 92 camaro and it did that. Also could be a map sensor.

Is your check engine lite on ?? if so have it checked out, usually if the lite is flashing there is a missfire.it could be a coil, wires, fuel pressure. or like you think a bad injector. good luck
