I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Good stuff, free for everyone from:

I have been using free AVG anti-virus, and free ZoneAlarm internet security for several years with zero problems. I highly recommend both of these. Good luck

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.

If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.

Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

My personal opinion is AVG

Read about it & get it here -

You should also have three anti spy ware programs.

Windows Defender is free from Microsoft. Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot and AdAware scan for and remove spyware. Run them both about once a week. Get them both free here - http://www.download.com
