how do keep off the grass signs actually get there?

Ha, very funny. Well the grass is OK to be walked on by the owner, just not random people. In some cases there are chemicals applied and it is dangerous to walk on for a short period of time so they put out the signs before applying the chemicals such as pesticide or fertilizer.

If you go out early in the morning and watch a grass lawn you may be lucky enough to see birds carrying these signs and placing them in holes carefully excavated by moles.

Occasionally though cheeky squirrels come and move them causing no end of confusion.

In some cases spiders try to prevent this by making them more secure by tieing them down with webs.
