A knot is a distance, calculated from the circumferance of the earth at the equator, and expressed in minutes of a degree, and takes into account the curvature of the earth.
The earths circumferance is 24,901.55 miles.
This figure is then divided by 360 to get miles per degree ( of a circle) 24901.55/360 = 69.171 miles per degree, or by dividing by 60 again gives you 1.1528 miles per minute of arc.
So to convert from knots to miles - multiply by 1.1528
to convert miles to knots divide by 1.1528.
Phew!! hope that helps.
