Most BC pills take about a month to take effect. As do Depo and other types of BC.
Although it helps reduce the risk of pregnancy, you should still wear protection or use other methods of BC.

Birth control pills usually take 1 week to become effective. When you get the pack, check the little instruction book that comes with it just to make sure. You will need to use a back up method, like a condom, during the first week to prevent pregnancy.
If you are getting the shot (depo) it will be effective after only 24 hrs (that is straight from the depo website).
A lot of women think they need to wait a month, but that is false. You can use back up for a month if you want to, but it is technically not necessary to prevent pregnancy.

That is going to depend on what kind of birth control it is and when you start taking it. Many doctors will tell you to start the first pill on the first sunday after you get your period. That is the most effective and while you're on your period your odds of getting pregnant are very slim, so the birth control has that time to take effect. Your doctor may still recommend using a condom or other method for the first month, just to be on the safe side.

Most birth control will tell you how long you have to wait. You always start it the first day of a period. Some you have to wait 1 week others it's 2 before you have intercourse.
