Antibiotics are man made chemicals that kill bacteria in different ways. Chemists make chemicals like penicillin, tetracylines, sulfur drugs, and lots of other compounds that work in different ways to prevent bacteria from multiplying or just kill them directly. They need to find out how to get the drugs to dissolve and react and this involves pH, solubility, salts, acids, crystals, reactivity and a whole lot of other chemical principles.

Antibiotics were discovered, not invented. It was observed that a speck of mold produced a material that was lethal to bacteria. Chemists now can figure out the molecules and change them slightly so that they have less side effects. Antibiotics are made by biochemists in huge vats where it is the molds that are doing the work.
