Any of Michael Crichton's books are great, he is one of my favorite authors. I am reading State of Fear right now and it is really good. I really like jurassic park and lost world (100 times better than the movies) and Timeline was amazingingly good.
the DaVinci code was also an excellent book, exciting, suspensful, just all around a good read.
Authors: Francine Rivers, Elizabeth Chadwick, Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice is the best book ever!) and I can't think of anything else right now.

I would say you not only should but it should be made a priority for people to read, "How Reading Changed MY Life" by Ann Quinlan. Some other books I really enjoy is the whole Weetzie Bat Series by Francisca Lia Block, I enjoy some of Ann Rice's work, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin, Tao Te Ching by Stephen Mitchell, Night by Elie Wiesel, Foxfire by Joyce Carol Oates, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, The Bet by Anton Chekhov {it's not a whole story, it is a short story but it is wonderful.}, Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce, A prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving or the World according to garp, Jitterbug Perfume by tom Robbins or Still life with woodpecker by the same man, Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance I don't know by who. A Raw Youth I don't remember how to spell his name. Happy Reading.

The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. The series spans from c.1880s to 1920s, and is about a family of English archaeologists, who seem to corpses wherever they go (and not just of the mummified variety).
