On the back of the sofa where no one can see try to test your idea. Then once you do this try to wash it off or remove it with a light sand paper, wet clothe, fingernail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or anything else you can think of that won't burn the leather. The reason would be that you want to make sure that your best friend in white jeans or synthetics won't stand up to say good-bye to you and you are mortified that she has a nice patch of color on her back side. My Mom has stripped down leather shoes for years and repainted them using permanent shoe polish. Find a swirled pattern on popular sofa's with two tones of brown or the color you desire and see if you can simulate the pattern. As a straight color might not apply evenly. I once completely changed the interior of my car (dash, seats and all) using a spray-on fabric paint.

This is not something we would recommend you do yourself.
We train leather techniucians and it can take years for them to perfect the art of using the correct products and doing the correct preparation. Certainly shoe products are not the right ones to use, and you also have to get the right finishes.
If your leather is an aniline style,(one without a pigment coating) you can use aniline dyes but as you ahve said the colour has cracked I don't think you have that sort of leather. You cannot just paint leather, the pigments have to be flexible and water based .
It can however be done professionally and LTT have technicians all over the country who they have trained.

You could use special leather ink, but its very hard to get an even color. First of all, you would have to have it bleached, then treated, then have the ink applied, and then finished. I'd have a professional do that, cause I really doubt you can get it right if you've never done it before.

I would get in contact with a tannery and ask them what to do... you can also use the same products that people use to whiten their tennis shoes...or white shoe wax... or you can dye it in any other colour !
