When my wife was pregnant, the ultrasound tech would measure the diameter of the head of the baby as well as the length of some of the bones. Apparently, she had some data that estimates what the weight of the baby is based on these measurements.

They take mesurements of the different parts of the body and figure out the wight by the size, However I had an ultrasound 2 days before I delieverd and they told me that my baby was 8 1/2 Lbs but when he was born he was only 6lbs 14oz so it is just an estiment. As long as your baby is developing well and has a good heartbeat I would not concern yourself with the weight

They can estimate the weight by the measurments. For example.... a baby with a 10 inch head is going to weigh more than a baby with a 5 inch head. Health professionals know what measurements= what weight.

They go off of measurements(not sure exactly how they calculate it though)
They are not always very accurate(had a friend who they told at her 8 month appointment that her baby was overly small...had baby a couple of weeks later weighing over 9 pounds) but for the most part they can give you close to what the baby weighs

they measure the baby's skull tummy and thigh bone to get the weight but it is only a guess the baby may be a pound more or less my little one was 5lbs 8oz my last ultrasound doc says he may be bigger and i think he is! you will only know the true weight when they weigh him or her at delivery congrats

My measurements of the head, chest, legs and other parts of the body. These are all compared to averages of fetal size and weight and they use those to calculate a basic weight range for your baby.

the answers everyone is giving you are what i was going to tell you. but i wanted to let you know, don't believe everything they tell you. the machine said i was going to have a big baby. every test they did came back saying "large for date" she was born, and weighed 6lbs. 6 oz. she was tiny. so the machine just guess, but they are not always accurate.
