I live in New York. There was some damage to my apartment, and my landlord is charging me $6000 to replace a few internal doors and repaint one of the rooms. While I am responsible for the damage, $6000 is way too much. Does anyone know a lawyer I can contact or a public service agency which can help me figure out what my next step should be?

What happen in your apartment that would constitute that much damage? Did you have a wild party? I would need to know more about the damages. Are you now being evicted or were you given a notice to move and pay the damages?

READ YOUR RENTAL AGREEMENT SECTION ABOUT PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE UNIT.

The manager has to give you the option to have the repairs done before he/she can tell you that you owe $6k. They have to get three estimates and charge you for the cheapest one, whether they decide to use a higher bid.

6K seems a little high even for NYC, did you go out and get your own price to fix the problem? what type of tenancy do you have, are you rent control? better get a third party price on fixing the problem, can try the law school in NYC to see if they have a program to help people in your situation
