The American media, with it's inherent rightwing bias, is making much ado about the baby born in New Orleans who was born from a frozen embryo that was saved in the aftermath of Katrina.

The underlying message, of course, is that stem cell research is bad, because it uses frozen embryos.

Considering that other living, breathing children and adults of New Orleans were drowning in attics and nursing homes at the time the effort was made to rescue these embryos, do you think this was really the ethically correct use of limited resources and manpower?

Stem cells aren't taken from embryos that are destined to become babies. They're taken from embryos that would otherwise be destroyed. They are embryos made from the sperm and eggs of people who have either decided not to move forward with the embryo implant, or have already successfully gotten pregnant with another embryo. The faulty logic that is often presented with regard to stem cell research is that "innocent babies are being killed for research." That is simply not true. These embryos will never become viable. They are headed for the incinerator anyway. If the right wing considers an embryo and a baby to be the same thing, where is the outrage over all the wasted "lives" when these embryos are incinerated with the same ceremony we show our garbage?

The media has been playing games with the stem cells.

Do you know there are more than one source of stem cells.
Core blood, adults, etc.

That Republican's have only one problem with just one line that coming from frozen human embros.

That there has been 72 cures from adult stem cells and none from fetal stem cells.

The under lying deal is people like you want to lump all stem cells with frozen embros and don't want to talk about the other lines.
Yet you will have people get up and claim that Reeves would walk again if they elected Kerry. Giving those who are living with those dieases and such false hope for votes is just evil.
Here is place to go that knows what is going on and they site sources more so than those who think frozen stem cells are the way to go.

Or maybe you think this is a good idea too:

New Orleans good example of how the Mayor Naggin was suppose to have a plan in place for the 1st 48 hours to do without the FEMA. Did he? How about those buses underwater he had the transportation but didn't use it.
The governor had the National Guard and the units were all train in support there but she didn't use them.
Yet you bit into the idea that is was Bush's fault.

When Mississippi hit just as hard as New Orleans were going back to school before New Orleans.

Becareful of the stories you site beause there is another side you don't want to be know.

Fertility companies are great and profitable business, I am sure you have figured out by now the help goes to those who can afford it.

I believe that this is hyped up in the media heavily playing into the controversy surrounding stem cell research. What is never or rarely mentioned is that after a certain time frame the "parents" of the embryos will be asked to terminate or donate the unused embryos. Since the sale of Embryos is prohibited if the couple is not going to use them there are few other options other than termination.

So we will have embryos frozen for indefinite periods of time until they are no longer viable, destroyed, or donated to research that has the potential to save millions of lives. This shouldn't be such a tough question.

I'd prefer to save the living. Cells are only cells, regardless of whether they're set to grow into part of a kidney or an entire human being. We strive for perfection in life: a healthy life, a special existence. Embryos do have a lot of potential, but something like 33% of women lose their first embryo without even knowing that they were pregnant at all. It's not "abortion" to use embryos, not like people are afraid of. Animals under stress (dogs I know, and probably others) can re-absorb embryos if they feel the environment is too dangerous for birth.

I think that takes ALOT of inference to garner a right wing bias out of that article. I read it earlier this morning. It just seems like an interesting article. I doubt the evil neocons hiding behind the curtains thought they could fool everyone with their subliminal right-wing biased in this story.

Seriously though, yahoo is left wing. They had an article on the soccer player guy and it had an add in there that said "Hillary in 2008? Yes or No?" with a big pic of her. They feature Oprah, Leo and...Al Gore here on answers! The media is not right wing. Only someone without an education would make such egregious statements

Great question....

I think we should have been focused on the folks trapped. If someone actually made a conscience decision to disregard stranded citizens for frozen embryos, they clearly have a moral compass that needs to be fixed.

Unfortunately some people let their belief system overcome common sense and decency. Very similar to Muslim terrorists killing innocent people in the belief that they are doing God's will.

The media has a left wing bias and if you don't think so you must be on the wing tip!
Besides, you do what you can where you are in a situation like that.
Sorry but a lot of stupid people could have left and did not .
give me a break that is natural selection man!

Well.. at least the embryos have an excuse for still being in New Orleans when the levees were breached.

Sure, don't tell people in an emergency what is politically correct, just support what they do.
And that is to help everyone that they can.
