I am in the process of training to become a broadcast journalist in my spare time. I currently work full time in a tv job which i have done for ages and am fed up with! I am on a reasonable salary and am wondering what sort of salary drop am i likely to be looking at to get in to radio or stay in tv as a broadcast journalist?

It's a hard business nowadays, because there are so many consolidations, they don't need many people. Not only that but for TV and radio, news is less and less of a moneymaker for them. The TV jobs are going to spokesmodels. Salaries are on the low end because it's a popular job.

Radio guys are relying on people like me, who work from home and handle our own health insurance and stuff.

You have a really good in, being part of the TV world already. Can you think up a story and volunteer to go out and do it to prove that you can?

Well you aren't going to get rich ,unless you're a Diane Sawyer or Charles Gibson or Katie Curic or Brian Williams. National anchors usually work their way up with the networks after being local affiliate reporters. You should in your spare time , when you have some, be getting experience in local radio, either with univesity or college radio or with your local cable or network stations.

Can't tell you a specific salary only what I hear from friends in radio , that if they wanted to get rich they'd have gone to another career.

Well since we don't know what your currently salary is, we can't really determine who much of a DROP there would be. I can tell you that your salary will depend on market size and your level of experience & talent.

If you're in some way unique and interesting or really good-looking, and have a knack for investigative reporting, stay in TV.
