I have a cd that teaches you french through conversation. I was thinking of playing it at a low volume to myself in my sleep. Does the brain still learn when your asleep as I heard that your senses shut down.

Hypnopaedia was described in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World but while it proved a useful tool for societal conditioning(in the book it was used on babies and children to teach them about behavioural and class structure) as the brain absorbs emotional stimuli but not actual facts as such, it has rarely been used successfully for teaching anything concrete like a language. If you listen to it while you are relaxed and sleepy, certain aspects like accent will stick but it won't do much for vocabulary memory.

Funny, here's one for you Nine words women use 1.) Fine : This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. 2.) Five Minutes : If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. 3.) Nothing : This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. 4.) Go Ahead : This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It! 5.) Loud Sigh : This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 ) 6.) That's Okay : This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how you will pay for your mistake. 7.) Thanks : A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome. 8.) Whatever : Is a women's way of saying F@!K YOU! 9.) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to #3. CHeeRIoS

Does not work, unfortunately. If it did, by now everybody in the world would have chosen to go to school in our sleep and use the daytime hours to play and otherwise fool around. Several colleges and universities did many intensive studies of this possibility some forty years ago and learned that we cannot teach people who're asleep. A few repeat studies have been done in the years since, and still the same result: it does not work. So I suggest you take that CD back to the creep who sold it to you with the promise you can learn in your sleep and beat the living s h i t out of him for ripping you off!

i learn Spanish like that, it does work I believe but I'm not sure it is an efficient way of learning. Although some people DO swear by it.

I attended a course run by the Health and Safety executive once and I was dozing most of the time. At the end of the course I had only learned the parts when I was awake., So it can't work all THAT well.

Thats subliminal and illegal, the brain takes things in all the time, sleep is when we sort out all the information we take in during the day. sleep and then when ready relax to it.

odd as it may seem, but yeah its possible. it's called sleep learning. repetitively hearing the information will help your mind retain it. just keep listening to it until you fall asleep. it's quite fascinating actually. i'm considering doing that as well to memorize all these weird terminologies in psychology.

You are more likely to learn something that you have been revising just before you go to sleep. This is how actors learn their lines overnight!

It works but don't think you will learn it over night ( pardon the pun) you will have to listen to it over and over and over again for about 6-9 months

I really don't think that works...I think that you should just take time to actively listen to the tape and repeat the words back to learn them
