Be careful with that, although programs such as Nero will do it easily (Nero Vision is the program to encode video), I suggest not encoding an avi or an mpg to DVD format to play in a DVD player. The loss in quality is dramatic. It is far better to buy a DVD player that supports DivX and Xvid. (The Philips DVP642/37 is my recommendation.)

Other programs that will do it are;

Avi2DVD http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/avi2dvd.cfm

or ConvertXtoDVD

There are many answers to this question. The best place to go is www.videohelp.com. this is an extensive site that has many ways to encode, convert, burn, customize, and rip dvd's to make back up copies, etc. It has help guides to do just about anything dealing with videos. It also has all the programs you will need and how to do the job with free software.
