I started a new job just over 2 weeks ago now. I'm on a good hourly rate, but I haven't done any work. This is not because i am lazy, it is because most of my work revolves around assisting the big boss and he hasn't been in due to family circumstances.

Basically i have been sitting here on Yahoo answers and getting paid well for it.

Am i thief for taking their money and not working for it?

The place I work is more of a knowledge based company, not skills. so its experience that counts here, which i can't get at the moment, because the boss is not giving me work.

For those of you who said i should clean, you can fvck off, i'm not a poxy bin man.

I have asked the wider team to give me anything they want doing and they haven't come back to me. I have done a little bit of work but it was only little and took all of a day.

Go for it, if it wasn't you it would be somebody else. He might work you like a slave when he gets back, so make the most of it.

To the company you may indeed be a thief. You are stealing time from them, so to speak. I would ask someone what else you can do to be useful to the company. Although you may enjoy just sitting there answering/asking questions on Y!Answers, you are not being productive, and if your boss finds out you haven't been when he returns, your job could be in jeopardy. So it's not worth it. Find some work you can do around there and impress your boss if you want to keep your job.

Does the "big boss" not have a deputy to cover his absences, allocate work etc? It seems to me that the employer is negligent in failing to ensure that you are adequately managed during the boss's absence. Since this is a new job, it is unreasonable to expect you to make decisions entirely on your own initiative, however, sitting on Yahoo answers for long periods of time is not the best use of your time, which you are being "well paid" for.

Nope if your job is to assist the boss that is what you are there to do. If the boss isn't there and you show up for work everyday you are still at work . If it bothers you that much contact the boss and find out what you could be doing while he is away. This will give brownie points and help you keep your job.

No, you are not a thief. But...isn't there something you could be doing to try to keep yourself busy? Couldn't you ask co-workers if they need help with anything? If the boss comes back and sees you have done absolutely nothing, maybe he will figure you are not a go-getter. Just a thought.

No it is the employers fault if they are paying you for no work it sounds like you want to work and there is nothing to do I say enjoy doing nothing as long as you can until your boss comes back.
But if you still feel guilty contact your boss or other co-manager to ask if anything needs done even filing.

OOOh I hate it when that happens. I was getting paid at a job where I was training for mgmt...and they never had time to train me.

I'm the type if I have nothing to do, I either find something or help someone else.

I can't stand to not be busy.

If they are willing to pay you - then you are not stealing.

Is there no one else in the organisation who you could ask about your duties? It could be worthwhile to contact the boss and ask him what he'd like you to be doing. Say that you understand his situation but that you feel guilty not having enough to do.

If you want to quit let me know so I can put in my resume. No its not stealing. You actually are doing your job. Your just waiting on your boss to give you another assignment!

No because, the Law defines theft as an act of 'deseption', or 'to take without concent'.

They know you have nothing to do, and have knowledge that they are paying you, so feet up fags out, and relax.
