A baby would be more fun for you.
A Ph.D would be more fun for everyone else.

You can always get a Ph.D, but the return investment on a baby is far greater than you can imagine! I don't know how old you are, but risks increase in pregnancy with age. Pregnancy gets more difficult as age increases. When you're younger you have more energy and it's easier to lose the baby weight. While there is a disadvantage to waiting to have a baby, is there a disadvantage to waiting to get a Ph.D? Maybe there is, I don't know your field. Good luck with your decision. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. Make a decision, then MAKE IT the right one.

Get the degree, then have the baby, since getting a Ph.D with a screaming baby in the house is almost impossible.

Is the Ph.D essential to furthering your career, or do you just want to be called Dr.babeAngel?
For my career, a Ph.D really does nothing......but they keep trying to get me to go back to school for it.....
Go have a baby!

LOl! if you are doing both right now then you can... it depends on the person, but I find raising a child (I dont have one yet) more exciting than going to school for a phd. I respect parents more than an childless individual because to raise another human being is a job itself, and if you were good at it that has to be rewarding. Its an experience that is different from anything else and its your own personal one. Especially for Mothers to have something grow in you for nine months, that is amazing. Alot of people do both and that just go to show you how amazing people can be... but it is tough...

You only think you can't do both- but you can. I have a Ph.D., it wasn't that hard, and a lot of the stuff you need to do is extremely flexible. The only thing I would caution against is the debt of both- very $$ to manage both.

i would much rather have a baby. i dont like ph.d people. studing for so long takes all the fun out of them and they become snooty, self richious and correct us mere mortals and make us feel stupid. where is having a baby would be the most wonderfull experience in life. im going through a bit of a broody period myself, i love children they are the greatest joys of life

You don't have to do them at the same time. Have the baby first, then if you still want to, and have the time, you can do your PhD.
If you do the PhD first, it may be too late to have the baby. And, believe me, a baby will bring you far more happiness than a PhD.
