I just got a positive on a home pregnancy test. My insurance doesnt kick in until February 1st and they cant get me in to see my Primary care Dr until the 7th. Then he has to refer me to an OBGYN which could take another few weeks. Is it okay to wait that long to get a blood test and check up? If I go to another OBGYN and just pay cash for the first visit and blood work, will the rest of my pregnancy not be covered by my insurance since I went before Feb 1?

Talk to the person in charge of insurance at your company (or call the insurance company yourself). It depends on the company. I was already 6 mos pregnant when my insurance kicked in and they covered it completely! Just do some digging. Good luck.

You need to check your policy because some require that you have the insurance 10 months before you get pregnant to be covered.

Also you should wait until after it kicks in to go to the doctor because if there is any proof that you knew you were pregnant then your insurance can refuse to cover you. You are OK to go a few months without a doctors visit as long as you are taking good care of yourself and taking prenatals. I was 19 weeks with my first one when I found out I was pregnant and she did great even with no early prenatal care.

I know when I got married I had to take a physical to be on my husband's insurance and they did a preg test. They said I could not get pregnant before the effective date or the insurance would not pay. All companies are different, so call their 800 number and ask. Good luck. I would see the Dr as soon as possible.

First of all you still have a few weeks before a doctor will even see you...they usually make your first visit around 9-12 weeks.

As for insurance I think that you have to deliver after 12 months of it being in affect for it to cover it....otherwise it is considered to be preexisting.

I don't know where you are from but I do know that you shouldn't have to go through your primary care physician to get a referral to an OB...you should just be able to call them and make an appointment.

As long as you have not had a positive pregnancy test given by a doctor, it is not considered pre-existing. Home pregnancy tests do not count. It has to be confirmed by a doctor. As long as you wait until after Feb. 1st to go to the doctor to get confirmation of pregnancy, you will be covered by your insurance carrier.

You'll have to ask the insurance company - some will have you pay until the insurance date kicks in and then take over, and some will compensate you for the costs incurred prior to start date (because it's a pregnancy, they don't do this for all conditions).

It doesnt matter when you go to the doctor. It still counts as pre exixting because you got pregnant before your insurance kicked in. so you will have to pay for the first 6 mos in most cases but it should be able to cover the hospital stays at delivery and thats the worst part financially

Double check with your insurance company but generally speaking pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition. My best friend switched medical insurances in the middle of her pregnancy and she had no problems with her coverage.

I know for a fact that they can not consider pregnancy a pre existing condition any longer where I live, Wi. ANd I'm pretty sure that it's a federal law that they can no longer say it is one. but call your insurance or look in your book they'll be happy to help you but i'm tihnking your okay and covered!

Congratulations!!!

I was pregnant with my second girl and due March 8th 2006. My husband changed jobs in January and my pregnancy was not considered pre-existing. That, of course was our main concern when we switched insurance companies and the HR person at his new job informed us that it was once considered pre-existing, but most insurance companies have changed.

I wish you best of luck and Congatulations!
